A pleasant stroll takes you to the old part of the city, where you can visit the Tavira Tower and Plaza de España. A walk along Caleta beach, on the seafront, takes to to Santa Catalina Castle.
Puertatierra Walls
A symbol of the city of Cádiz and the remains of the ancient city wall, built by the architect Torcuato Cayón in the 18th century. They are made of marble and were intended to be a religious altarpiece before being used as a military fortification.
Puerta de Tierra Turret, built at the end of 1850, was designed as tower number 57 of the "Optical telegraph line of Andalusia", for use as a message-emitter between the Ministry of Governance in the capital of Spain and Cádiz. In 1857 it was no longer used for this purpose, following the introduction of electric telegraph poles. The purple flag of the district can be seen on this emblematic building. It now separates the Old Town from the modern part of Cádiz.
Monument to the Parliament
Situated in Plaza de España, this monument commemorates the centenary of the Constitution of 1812. It was erected in 1912 based on a project by the architect Modesto López Otero and the sculptor Aniceto Marinas. It has allegories related to war, peace, agriculture and industry. This monument, which is constructed in an austere, stately style, blends in perfectly with the gardens of Plaza de España.
Tavira Tower
Located in the Palace of the Marquises of Recaño (now the Conservatory of Music of Cádiz), it was built in the 18th century in a Baroque style. The Tower is one of the many watchtowers that exist in the city, and is the tallest (45 metres above sea level). Its name comes from the first watchman, the soldier Antonio Tavira. The building has two exhibition rooms and a vantage point, which is in fact, the dark chamber from where there is a marvellous view of the city of Cádiz.
Santa Catalina Castle
Santa Catalina Castle is on Caleta beach, and was built at the end of the 16th century, curiously enough, contrary to the wishes of the people of Cádiz. It is used for cultural activities such as exhibitions of different techniques. One most important feature is the spikes that jut out towards the sea, in the shape of a star.
